Brotato Starts Balancing Primal Dread in a New Beta Branch

Four days after Primal Dread launched, the Brotato team is already adjusting it. On November 6, 2026 they published patch 1.2.0.2.beta-0, a balance pass built from feedback on the Steam Discussions, Discord and Reddit about Mutation feeling weak, Mecha feeling too strong, and Variant being annoying to play against or with.
Instead of shipping straight to the default branch, this round of changes goes into an opt-in beta first. The devs say balancing never really stops and they want to test tweaks and gather more reactions before locking anything in. Once things feel right, the changes move to the main branch.
What actually changed
Variant got reworked: the old “50% chance a mutating item becomes a better tier mutated item” is gone, replaced by a flat 25% chance for any item to mutate when you equip it, whether bought or looted from a crate. A new Uncommon item, Chimera Cells, adds +10% mutation chance per copy (max 5) and unlocks by winning a run with Variant. Wildfire Mutation is no longer locked behind Variant and is available by default now.
Mutation itself scales faster, hitting 70% strength at 40 Evolution instead of around 150, and full strength at 100 instead of 150. Pets, structures and some effects can now be copied starting at 40 Evolution, though Anvil’s effect is now excluded from copying.
Mecha took a nerf: part drop chance drops from 2% to 1.5%, and weapon mechanization stat bonuses now cap out at rank 8 instead of rank 4, with growth stopping after that while costs keep rising. Time Shifter no longer rolls Dodge upgrades and Arsonist no longer rolls Engineering upgrades. Fossil item stats got rebalanced across the board, mostly buffed, and you now earn a ban token every 4 waves up to wave 20.
Jungle enemies got some tuning too
Several Jungle threats are less punishing now. Acid puddle damage scaling was lowered and it only starts ticking after you’ve stood in it a second. Velociraptor, Pterosaur and Giant Dragonfly all got slower charge or chase speeds, Carnivorous Plant Mother lost HP, and the Brachiosaurus fires fewer projectiles (14 down to 8) but gained a foot landing attack. Jeholopterus was pulled from the Jungle entirely. Several waves got spacing and spawn-grouping fixes aimed at melee builds, plus a batch of smaller bug fixes like the wrong Lystrosaurus sprite and broken codex completion percentages.
What this means if you run mods
To try this patch, open your Steam Library, right-click Brotato, go to Properties, then Betas, and pick “beta” from the dropdown. Your save will carry over between beta and main branch once this goes live, since it’s a balance update rather than a structural one.
If you use Workshop mods, the developers are direct about it: deactivate and unsubscribe from all of them before switching to the beta branch. Mods built around the old Variant or Mecha numbers, or around the previous Fossil and enemy stats, may not match what’s running now, and outdated mods can cause crashes or corrupt your save. As a general rule when a game shifts underlying numbers like this, it’s safer to wait for mod authors to confirm compatibility before resubscribing once the beta changes become the new default.
