The ETS2 Coaches DLC: tourist jobs, passenger comfort, two coaches, and what it will mean for mods

SCS Software has been writing about the upcoming Coaches DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2 since the spring, in a long series of blog posts running from “Coaches in Map Expansions” in April to the Scania Touring gameplay preview on 10 October. Taken together they describe a new kind of job rather than a new truck. Here is how passenger transport will work, based on what SCS has shown, and what it is likely to do to the mod scene once it arrives.
Two coaches so far
The MAN Lion’s Coach was previewed in July and the Scania Touring on 10 October, in a drive from Narvik to Andenes through northern Norway. Both are full vehicles with the detail of SCS’s recent trucks, and the October post shows features specific to passenger work: an adjustable sun visor you can set to control how much light enters the cabin, and passengers who talk and make noise throughout the trip.
Tourist jobs
The 7 October post describes the job type. You pick passengers up at a bus station and take them to a landmark: natural scenery, a city centre for sightseeing, sometimes an industrial depot with a guided tour. How far you drive depends on whether the landmark is locally or globally known. Some destinations have opening hours, and the arrival time takes them into account; the schedule is more relaxed than contract jobs, so you can take your time. At the destination a scenic viewpoint and a short cutscene play, many viewpoints with a short description of the place. Then you bring the passengers back to where they started; the job is a round trip.
Comfort matters
The Scania Touring preview introduced a G-force indicator: sharp turns and hard braking push it up, and when passengers’ comfort limits are exceeded they react loudly. Passenger satisfaction feeds into your result at the end of the journey. Driving a coach well, in other words, is not the same as driving a truck fast, and the DLC will reward the smooth driver.
Ownership, schedules and the map
Earlier posts, “Vehicle Ownership & Job Schedule” in August and “Coaches & Road Trip: Mode Switch” in September, cover owning coaches and how the game switches between trucking and coaching, and the April post covers how coaches fit the map expansions. SCS is also building the map for it: the Edinburgh preview from 21 October shows a bus station designed with the Coaches DLC in mind, where passengers can be picked up and dropped off. Expect bus stations across the map to be part of the package.
What SCS has not said
A release date. The price. Whether American Truck Simulator gets an equivalent. How passenger jobs pay compared with freight. Any of this may appear in the next posts; the series has arrived roughly every few weeks.
What it means for mods
- Existing bus mods stay what they are. There are many buses in the mod scene, converted from other games and driven as trucks. They do not have the passenger systems and will not gain them by themselves; a modder would have to rebuild them on the DLC’s framework once it exists.
- Skins first. The day the DLC is out, the first mods will be liveries for the two coaches: real operators, national colours, fictional companies. Expect hundreds within weeks, as happened with every new truck.
- Interiors and accessories next, then third-party coaches built properly for the passenger systems, once modders understand how the job definitions work.
- Map mods and bus stations. If tourist jobs depend on bus stations and landmarks that SCS adds to the official map, map mods covering those cities will need updates to include them, or the jobs will not reach into modded territory.
- Traffic. Coaches in AI traffic already exist through packs like the bus traffic packs on this site; the DLC’s coaches will presumably join the official traffic pool, and filter mods will need a small update.
Why this is the biggest change of the year
Map expansions add roads; truck packs add vehicles; the Coaches DLC adds a different way to play the same world, with its own vehicles, jobs, scoring and infrastructure. For a mod scene built around trucks, that is a new category. We will cover the release and the first mods when they come.
