Brotato’s Primal Dread DLC Is Out Now, Plus a Free Update for Everyone

Evil Empire dropped the Primal Dread DLC for Brotato on November 2, 2026. It’s the first paid expansion since Abyssal Terrors came out, and the developer calls it the biggest addition to the game in over two years. Alongside the DLC there’s also a free update that touches every player, DLC owner or not.
What’s in Primal Dread
The DLC adds a new map called the Jungle, built around dinosaurs instead of the sea creatures from Abyssal Terrors. It comes with 20 new waves of enemies, elites and bosses. Expect dinosaur packs that charge in stampedes, plus flying dinosaurs that show up because the Jungle also introduces a new hazard: holes scattered across the map.
There’s a new stat called Evolution, which lets you push your run toward either Mecha or Mutant. Mecha reinforces your weapons and buffs your stats, but spawns mecha dinosaurs that shoot lasers and leave slowing oil puddles. Mutant can randomly copy your item effects for a chaotic power spike, at the cost of facing acid-spraying mutant dinosaurs. Picking up the right item drops on the map determines which path you lean into.
On top of that, the DLC brings 10 new characters, including the Time Shifter (slows everything but you when you take a hit), the Veteran (built to tank swarms without healing) and the Archeologist (digs up crates at dig sites to get stronger). There are also 17 new weapons, more than 30 new items, 3 new pets, new music tracks, and achievements that Steam now keeps separate from the base game’s achievement list.
Free update for everyone
Even if you skip the DLC, the November 2 update adds an Item Set feature, rebalances Nightmare difficulty enemies, and buffs a number of older characters from both the base game and Abyssal Terrors.
What this means if you run mods
The developer flagged this directly: the game has been updated, and outdated community mods can now cause conflicts. The official advice is to deactivate all your mods before loading up Brotato again. If you rely on mods for characters, items or balance changes, treat them as untested against this build until their authors confirm they still work. Back up your mod folder before you clear it out, just in case you need to roll back or compare versions later. As with most major updates in modded games, it usually takes some time after release for mod authors to check compatibility and push fixes, so don’t assume your favorite mod is safe to run yet.
Bugs and feedback
Evil Empire is asking players to report issues through the Discord feedback channel or Steam bug reports. The studio also said it plans to make adjustments based on feedback now that the DLC is live, and wants players to weigh in on Discord, Reddit or Steam Discussions.
