How to report a broken mod so the author can fix it, and what to send to us instead

A broken mod is fixed when its author can reproduce the problem. Most reports do not let them: “doesn’t work”, “crashes”, “fix it”. This guide is about sending a report that gets a fix, across BeamNG.drive, the SCS truck games and Farming Simulator, and about when to send the report to us instead of to the author.

First, make sure it is the mod

Authors receive a great many reports about problems that are not theirs. Five minutes saves everyone’s time:

  1. Compare the downloaded file’s size with the size on the file page. A partial download looks normal and fails in unpredictable ways.
  2. Run the game once with every other mod disabled (Safe Mode in BeamNG, a fresh profile in ETS2 or ATS, an unticked list in FS25) and the mod in question alone. If it works alone, the problem is a conflict with another mod, which is still worth reporting, but as “conflicts with X”.
  3. Check the game version against the one on the mod’s page. A mod made for 0.39 that misbehaves on 0.40 is a known situation, not a bug report; the author needs to know, but as “needs a 0.40 update”.
  4. Clear the cache (BeamNG) and try once more.

What a useful report contains

Where to send it

To the author, through the channel named on the mod’s page: a comment section, a Discord, a forum thread. ModsDrop hosts the file; the mod’s page on crashmods.com, linked from the file page, is where the author’s contact lives and where other users’ comments show whether the problem is already known. Read those comments first; the fix or the workaround is often already there.

What to send to us instead

Use the Report link on the file page for things that are about the file rather than about the mod’s quality:

Leave an e-mail address in the form if you want an answer; without one we can act but cannot tell you what we did.

What we cannot do

We do not fix mods. We cannot edit an author’s JBeam, we do not update files on their behalf, and we do not host “fixed” versions uploaded by third parties, because that is a reupload without permission with extra steps. If an author has abandoned a mod and it is broken on the current game version, the honest state of affairs is that it is broken, and the file page’s comments are the place to say so for the next person.

Tone

Authors do this for free, or for a 70% share of the advertising on a file page that earns cents a day. “Hi, the SVR config loses its rear bumper on spawn in 0.40.3, log attached, everything else deactivated, thanks for the mod” gets read. The alternative does not, and it should not.
