Official mods in Hogwarts Legacy: Play Mods menu, Mod Saves and load order

This guide is for PC players on Steam or the Epic Games Store who want to try official mods in Hogwarts Legacy without wrecking a save or losing achievements. By the end you will know how to install a mod, set up a Mod Save, check load order and undo things if a mod causes trouble.
Official mods only work on PC. They are not available on console. You also need your Steam or Epic account linked to a Warner Bros. Games account, and you need an online connection while using the Play Mods menu, even in a single player game.
Finding and installing mods
Open Play Mods from the main menu. Mods are hosted and reviewed through CurseForge, and you can browse what is available either on the CurseForge site itself or directly inside the game under the Discover or Browse tabs. Browsing on the website is useful for reading descriptions and checking author notes, but actual installation only happens inside the game.
Mods go through review before they show up as installable in the Play Mods menu, so there can be a short wait between a mod appearing on CurseForge and it being ready to install in game. This is normal and not a sign that something has gone wrong on your end.
Setting up a Mod Save
Mods in Hogwarts Legacy do not apply to your regular save. They only work on what the game calls a Mod Save, which is a separate copy of your progress. On the Enable Mods tab you have two options:
- Use Copy Save on an existing character. This duplicates your current progress into a new Mod Save and leaves your original, unmodified save completely untouched.
- Press New Character to start a fresh save specifically for modding.
Copying a save is the safer route if you have hours invested in your main character and want to keep that save clean. Either way, treat the Mod Save as a separate space to experiment in.
Enabling mods and load order
Once you have a Mod Save, select it from the Enable Mods screen. From there you can enable each mod you have installed. Next to each mod you will see a load order number. This number controls the sequence mods are applied in, which matters if two mods touch the same part of the game.
After enabling and ordering your mods, press Apply Changes or Apply & Continue to confirm. Each Mod Save keeps its own mod list and load order, so you can run a different combination on a second Mod Save without affecting the first.
Always load a modded save from the Enable Mods menu rather than the main menu’s regular load option. A save opened from the main menu runs without mods, even if it is technically the same Mod Save. After enabling new mods, expect a shader load the next time you boot in, which can take a moment longer than usual.
Achievements and Mod Saves
Achievements are turned off while you are playing on a mod-enabled save. If unlocking achievements matters to you, keep at least one unmodded save around and do your achievement runs there, saving the modded save for experimentation.
If something goes wrong
Mods can misbehave, especially when several are active together. If you notice odd behaviour, try these in order:
- Check whether the mod has an update available in the Play Mods menu.
- Change the load order, moving the problem mod earlier or later in the sequence.
- Disable the most recently added mod first, since that is usually the cause.
Warner Bros. Games support does not handle troubleshooting for individual mods. For specific issues, the mod author’s page or CurseForge support is the right place to ask.
Undoing changes
If a Mod Save becomes unstable or you simply want a clean slate, your original save (if you used Copy Save) remains untouched and playable from the main menu at any time. You can also disable all mods on a Mod Save from the Enable Mods tab and apply changes to return it to a vanilla state.
Before adding several mods at once, test one at a time on your Mod Save and note the load order it was given. If something breaks later, you will know exactly which mod to look at first instead of guessing through a long list.
