War Thunder Reveals Leopard 2A8 With Trophy Active Protection System

Gaijin used a dev blog on 30 October 2026 to show off the Leopard 2A8, the vehicle they’re calling the most advanced MBT heading into War Thunder. It’s coming to both the German and Swedish Rank VIII lineups as part of the Eagle’s Shadow update, and it’s built around one headline feature: an active protection system that’s new to the Leopard line.

What the Leopard 2A8 Brings to the Battlefield

The 2A8 is the direct follow-up to the 2A7 already in the game, and it’s meant to deal with threats the older models struggle against. The big addition is the Israeli-made Trophy APS, the same system already on the Merkava Mk.4M and the M1A2 Trophy-HV. It watches for incoming missiles and fires countermeasure projectiles from the turret to intercept them before impact, with six charges covering the tank from any direction, ground or air.

On top of the APS, the tank gets a spall liner, reinforced frontal hull armor, and extra composite modules on the sides. Its stock APFSDS round already punches hard, and once you unlock the DM53 APFSDS, Gaijin says it can get through nearly anything else on the field. The tradeoff is weight: it’s less nimble than the 2A4 and 2A5, so don’t expect to flank the way you would in the older variants.

In their own words, the developers describe the 2A8 as “a logical evolution of the 2A7 variant,” with the APS mainly meant to counter helicopters and ATGM launchers on the ground.

Germany and Sweden Both Get a Version

Germany receives the standard Leopard 2A8, while Sweden gets the variant configured for the Norwegian Army, referred to as the 2A8NO. That split lines up with how the real tank has rolled out: Norway originally ordered 2A7+ tanks in February 2023 before switching the contract to the 2A8 configuration in June of that year, and Germany signed its own framework deal for 123 units in May 2023. The first production tanks for both countries were shown off in Munich on 19 November 2025. Gaijin also notes that Lithuania, the Netherlands, Czechia and Croatia are expected to eventually field the 2A8 as well, though that’s about the real-world rollout, not the game.

What This Means for Mod Users

War Thunder has a modding scene built around custom skins, decals, and sound packs, and major content updates like Eagle’s Shadow are exactly the kind of patch that tends to break compatibility with anything tied to specific vehicle files or UI elements. If you run visual or audio mods, it’s a good idea to back up your current setup before the update lands and hold off installing anything new until modders confirm their work still functions on the updated client.

Also keep in mind Gaijin’s own caveat here: the Leopard 2A8’s stats, armor values and APS behavior could still change before it actually goes live, so anything built around today’s numbers might need tweaking later anyway.
