GTA VI arrives on consoles on 19 November: what it means for GTA V modding, and what to expect on PC

Grand Theft Auto VI releases on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, at $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the ultimate edition, after two delays from the original autumn 2025 target. For the modding scene the more important sentence is the one Rockstar has not said: there is no announced PC version. Here is where that leaves GTA V’s thirteen-year-old mod library, and what to expect from the sequel.
Consoles first, PC unconfirmed
Rockstar’s pattern is consoles first and PC later: GTA V took about nineteen months to reach PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 a little over a year. A report on 13 October, citing four anonymous industry sources, put the GTA VI PC version in the first quarter of 2027, which would be the shortest gap yet. Rockstar has neither confirmed a PC port nor a date. Until it does, GTA VI is a console game, and console games are not modded.
What this means for GTA V modding
- Nothing changes on 19 November. GTA V remains the only Grand Theft Auto that can be modded, and will for at least months. Script Hook V, OpenIV and the rest continue; mod sites continue; this library continues.
- Attention shifts, briefly. Every new Rockstar release pulls players away from the previous game for a while; mod download counts for GTA V will dip in late November and recover, as they did after Red Dead Redemption 2.
- GTA Online updates may slow. Fewer Online patches mean fewer Script Hook V breakages, which is the one way GTA VI could make GTA V modding easier.
- The Enhanced edition becomes the long-term home. Rockstar’s effort on GTA V’s PC side went into the Enhanced edition in 2025; mods that still target only Legacy will age out as tools and players move. If you maintain a GTA V mod, Enhanced support is the work worth doing.
What to expect from GTA VI modding, eventually
Three facts point in a direction without settling it. Rockstar has said user-generated content will play a role in GTA VI. It owns Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, since 2023, and FiveM is a PC-only platform. And Take-Two’s history of tolerating single-player mods while fighting anything that touches Online has not changed. The likely shape, when a PC version exists: a sanctioned route for custom servers and content built on the FiveM model, alongside the traditional unofficial tools once the engine is understood. None of GTA V’s tools transfer; a new engine generation means Script Hook V, OpenIV and ScriptHookVDotNet equivalents have to be written again, which took the community months in 2015.
Practical advice
- If you play GTA V with mods, carry on; nothing about the sequel affects your install.
- If you mod GTA V, keep both editions in mind and label which you tested.
- If you are waiting for GTA VI on PC, do not buy “GTA VI PC mods” from anyone. There is no PC version and no mods; anything sold as such is a scam, and the safety guide on native code explains why that category is dangerous.
- Expect this site’s GTA section to stay a GTA V section through at least the first half of 2027.
What we will cover
The console launch itself is outside what a PC mod library has to say about. A PC announcement, a modding policy statement from Rockstar, or the first sanctioned tools would be news here, and we will write about them when they are official rather than reported.
