GTA V mods in 2026: Script Hook V, OpenIV, the mods folder, the Legacy and Enhanced editions, and the one rule that matters

GTA V is thirteen years old, has two PC editions, a modding scene that predates most of the games on this site, and a sequel arriving on consoles in a few weeks. That combination makes it the game where people most often install the right mod the wrong way. Here are the rules that have not changed, the ones that changed with the Enhanced edition, and the one rule that matters more than all the others.
The rule above all: never mod Online
GTA Online runs on the same executable as the story mode, and Rockstar bans accounts that connect with modified files. Every modding tool worth using has a mechanism to keep mods out of Online: Script Hook V refuses to load when Online starts, and the “mods folder” approach described below keeps your original files untouched. Use them, and keep a habit: story mode with mods, Online without. The ban is permanent and the support desk does not care how it happened.
Legacy and Enhanced
Since March 2025 there are two PC editions. GTA V Legacy is the original 2015 PC version; GTA V Enhanced is the rebuilt edition with the console-generation features (ray tracing, faster loading, a newer engine build). They are separate installations with separate folders, and a mod or tool built for one does not automatically work on the other. Support for Enhanced arrived during 2025 in the main tools, but not at the same time and not for every mod; the mod’s page must say which edition it was tested on, and if it does not, assume Legacy. Many players keep both editions installed: Legacy for the mod library, Enhanced for the visuals.
The three tools
- Script Hook V (with its ASI loader) lets
.asiplugins run inside the game: trainers, native-code scripts, the loader that most other things depend on. It is updated by its author after each game patch; until then, scripts do not load, and a patch day is a wait-for-the-update day. - ScriptHookVDotNet runs scripts written in C# and other .NET languages (the
.dlland.csscript mods). It sits on top of Script Hook V. - OpenIV edits the game’s archives: it is how vehicle models, textures, maps and data files are installed. Its mods folder feature copies the archives you edit into a separate folder that the game loads instead of the originals, so the originals stay clean and Online stays safe. Use it for everything; never edit the game’s own files directly.
Kinds of mod and where they go
- Vehicle replacements: new models that replace an existing car. Installed with OpenIV into the mods folder; the readme names the archive and the files.
- Add-on vehicles: new cars with their own names, installed as a DLC pack into the mods folder plus a line in a dlclist file. Cleaner than replacements, more steps.
- Script mods:
.asifiles go next to the game executable;.dlland.csscripts go into ascriptsfolder there. Both run code with the game’s privileges. - Map and texture mods: OpenIV, mods folder, usually many files.
- Trainers and menus:
.asi, story mode only.
Code runs on your machine
This is the point that separates GTA V from BeamNG or Farming Simulator. A .asi or .dll is native Windows code: it can do anything a program you double-click can do. A model or texture cannot. Treat script mods with the care you would give a downloaded program: the author’s reputation, the VirusTotal result (every file on ModsDrop is scanned before publication, and for GTA scripts that scan is the one to read), and the absence of installers, password-protected archives and “launchers”. Antivirus software flags Script Hook V-based tools fairly often because they inject into a process; that is a false positive on known tools and a real warning on unknown ones.
Patch days
Rockstar still updates GTA V, mostly for Online. Each update can break Script Hook V until its author releases a matching version, and Enhanced updates have been more frequent than Legacy ones. The routine: disable automatic updates where the launcher allows, keep a copy of the previous Script Hook V, and when an update lands, wait a day before launching with mods.
GTA VI
GTA VI releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on 19 November 2026. There is no announced PC version; reports in October pointed to early 2027, which Rockstar has not confirmed. Rockstar has said user-generated content will matter in GTA VI and it owns the team behind FiveM, so some form of sanctioned modding is likely eventually, but nothing about the GTA V tools transfers. For modders, GTA V on PC remains the game for the foreseeable future.
Before you download anything
- Legacy or Enhanced? Match the mod’s page to your installation.
- Does it need Script Hook V, ScriptHookVDotNet or both, and are those updated for your game version?
- Is it a model (safe) or a script (code)? Read the scan, read the author.
- Do you have OpenIV’s mods folder set up, and a backup of your clean install?
- Are you going to play Online later? Then launch without the ASI loader, every time.
