BeamNG.drive on PlayStation 5: what the console version includes, and why mods stay on PC for now

BeamNG.drive reached PlayStation 5 on 19 October 2026, the same day PC players received version 0.40. For a game that spent twelve years as a PC-only early-access title, that is a milestone. For the people who read a mod site, it raises one question first: can console players use mods? Not at launch, and the developers are careful about promising when. Here is what the PS5 version is, what it is not, and why.

What launched on 19 October

The PS5 version is the current game, not a cut-down port. It shipped alongside 0.40, which means the Cherrier Percheron semi truck, the new European trailers, the rebuilt main menu and the new First Drive tutorial are all there. Two features were built with the console in mind:

The hotfixes that followed show the console being polished in public. 0.40.1 on 20 October fixed a PS5 interface crash that occurred when many images loaded at once. 0.40.2 on 22 October raised force-feedback strength on Thrustmaster PS5 wheels by a third, added handbrake support for the Logitech PRO on PS5 and fixed swapped throttle and clutch pedals on the Thrustmaster T598.

What is not there: mods and VR

The developers’ own words in the September announcement: “VR and mods won’t be supported at launch.” They add that they are aiming for feature parity across platforms where possible in the long term, but cannot confirm timing or scope. The World Editor, the tool used to build maps, is listed as a PC feature in the 0.40 notes.

Why is this hard? A BeamNG mod is a zip of arbitrary files, some of which are code (Lua scripts and UI apps) that runs inside the game. Consoles do not allow arbitrary code to run, and every platform holder requires content on its store to be curated and signed. Farming Simulator solved it with ModHub, a curated in-game catalogue of tested mods; Bethesda did something similar for Skyrim and Fallout. If BeamNG mods ever reach PS5, expect that shape: a selection of vehicles and maps vetted by the developers, delivered inside the game, with no scripts and no UI apps. Nothing of the sort has been announced.

What this means for the files here

Every BeamNG file on ModsDrop is a PC file and will stay one. There is no way to copy a zip onto a PlayStation, and no third-party tool that does it legitimately. If you see a site offering “PS5 BeamNG mods” for download, it is selling something it does not have.

The quiet good news for PC modders

The console launch changed the PC game for the better in ways that are easy to miss. Split-screen on PC exists because it was needed on PS5. Controller navigation across the whole interface was reworked for the same reason, and the wheel bindings added for consoles (the Logitech RS50 and the Revosim direct-drive wheels among them) arrived on PC too. The new occupant system, with seated characters who add real weight to the car, and the faster mod mounting are platform-independent work from the same release. A larger audience also tends to mean a longer development runway, which is what a mod scene lives on.

If you own both

Saves and career progress do not transfer between PC and PS5 at launch; nothing in the release notes mentions cross-platform progression. Treat them as two games that happen to share a version number: the PS5 for the sofa and split-screen, the PC for the mods.
