Phasmophobia’s Resonance Update Brings Unity 6, New Features and Xbox Play Anywhere

Phasmophobia’s developer has laid out what’s coming before the end of 2026, and it’s a big one. Instead of shipping the Unity 6 engine upgrade and the planned Content Update separately, the team is folding both into a single release called Resonance, due in late November 2026.

According to the developer, splitting these updates across different windows stopped making sense once both were far enough along, so they’re landing together instead.

What’s new in the Resonance update

The Sound Sensor is getting a visual overhaul. Icons on its map will now show the type of sound detected: looping sounds stay visible for a while, single sounds ping once and vanish. Only sounds on the same floor as the sensor will register, and you’ll be able to read ghost movement speed off the map, which should help during hunts.

Voice Recognition is expanding too. You’ll be able to tell the ghost to interact with nearby objects, like opening doors or flipping switches, or to throw something or give a sign. These commands also work for players using Text mode, and VR players on Text mode can trigger them through the Sanity watch. A new Journal page will list every usable phrase so you’re not guessing what the game will actually recognize.

Map selection changes as well. You can now build your own custom map pool by picking as many maps as you want, with quick buttons for small, medium and large maps, plus a dice option that mirrors the old Random Map polaroid.

The Unity 6 move and what it fixes

The engine switch is aimed squarely at stability and performance. The developer says many previously reported bugs have already been resolved during Unity 6 development, and the update should also address some of the more frequent crashes players have run into. Full patch notes will come at release.

Lighting across the game is being reworked for a more realistic look, even if it’s not something you’ll immediately notice. New graphics settings are coming too, including quality presets, an extreme shadow option, and Eye Adaptation for VR. The update also adds colour-blind accessibility modes covering protanopia, protanomaly, deuteranopia, deuteranomaly, tritanopia, tritanomaly, achromatopsia and achromatomaly. On the technical side, the developer expects real improvements to CPU, GPU, VRAM and RAM usage, along with fixes for memory leaks, though they’re clear that the real test comes once it’s in players’ hands.

Warnings, Xbox Play Anywhere, and what’s still ahead

A new in-game warning system is also part of Resonance. Players caught violating the Code of Conduct will get a warning first rather than an immediate ban, unless the violation is serious enough to skip that step. Anyone who files a report will also be told if it led to action against the reported player.

Phasmophobia is joining the Xbox Play Anywhere program with this update, meaning Xbox owners will be able to play across PC, laptops, ROG Ally and Xbox Series X/S from a single purchase.

Two things got pushed back. The Player Character Visual Update, which adds over 30 new cosmetics with colour and texture variants plus a reworked Customisation Shop UI, was originally meant for Resonance but needs more time, and no new date has been given yet. The 42 Edgefield Road map rework is still planned for later in 2026, with more details promised closer to release.

What this means if you run mods

Nothing here confirms how Resonance will interact with community mods, but engine changes like a Unity 6 upgrade can affect how existing mods load or behave, since mods often rely on hooking into specific engine versions. If you run mods on Phasmophobia, it’s a good idea to back up your current mod setup before updating and hold off on reinstalling anything until you’ve confirmed it still works after the switch to Unity 6. Checking in with whoever maintains a given mod after Resonance goes live is generally the safest way to know if an update is needed.

Based on the developer's announcement on Steam, 2 November 2026.
