Elden Ring mods and Easy Anti-Cheat: playing offline safely

This guide is for Elden Ring players who want to try community mods without risking a ban or wrecking their online save. It covers why mods and Easy Anti-Cheat do not mix, how to launch the game so it stays offline, and how to keep your saves separate. Read it before you install anything.

Why Easy Anti-Cheat and mods do not get along

Elden Ring uses Easy Anti-Cheat to protect its online features, things like co-op, invasions and the wider multiplayer scene. Easy Anti-Cheat checks that your game files match what is expected. Almost any mod changes files, so running a mod while Easy Anti-Cheat is active is likely to get flagged.

This is not a grey area. Mods are built for single player and offline use only. If you want to keep access to online play, modding and going online need to stay in separate lanes.

How mod pages handle this

Reputable mod authors know this problem well, so their pages usually explain how to start Elden Ring without Easy Anti-Cheat running. This is normally done through a separate launcher or executable that the mod or a well known modding tool provides, bypassing the anti-cheat process for offline sessions only.

Always read the mod author’s own instructions before installing anything. Do not guess at steps or copy a method from a different mod, since the exact launch method can vary between tools and mod setups.

Setting yourself up to mod safely

Before you touch any files, take a few minutes to prepare properly. A bit of structure here saves a lot of hassle later.

  1. Back up your existing save file to a separate folder outside the game directory, so your legitimate progress is untouched no matter what happens.
  2. Download mods only from the author’s own page, not from random reuploads or third party sites.
  3. Read the mod’s installation notes in full, including anything about launching offline or avoiding Easy Anti-Cheat.
  4. Create a new, separate save slot or profile just for modded play, rather than reusing your main online save.
  5. Launch the game using whatever offline method the mod page describes, confirming Easy Anti-Cheat is not running before you load a modded save.

Once this is in place, you can enjoy mods on your offline save without touching your clean online character.

Keeping modded and online play apart

Never go online with modded files active. That means no co-op, no invasions, no shared online features while any mod is loaded, even if the mod seems harmless or purely visual. Anti-cheat systems do not distinguish between a small tweak and a major overhaul; a mismatch in files is a mismatch.

Keep two clear save states. One is your untouched, vanilla save for online play. The other is your modded save, used only when you are launching through the offline method the mod requires. Do not copy progress between them casually, since a modded save carrying unusual data is another reason to keep it away from online services.

If you ever want to play online again, switch back to your vanilla save and launch the game normally, with Easy Anti-Cheat running as intended. Removing or disabling mods beforehand is the safest approach, since leftover modded files are what triggers anti-cheat concerns in the first place.

Undoing a mod install

Most mods can be removed by deleting the files they added or by restoring the backup copies you made before installing them. Good mod pages will tell you which files they changed and how to restore the originals. Keeping a backup of your original, unmodded game files makes this far easier, since you can simply replace the modded ones rather than reinstalling everything.

If you are not sure a mod has been fully removed, verifying your game files through your platform’s library tools is a reasonable way to restore anything that is still out of place.

If something goes wrong

If the game crashes on launch after installing a mod, check that you used the exact offline launch method the mod page described, not the normal game shortcut. A mismatch here is the most common cause of launch failures.

If you suspect you have gone online by mistake with mods active, close the game immediately, remove the mods, restore your vanilla save and files, and avoid online play until everything is back to a clean, unmodded state.

If a save seems corrupted or behaves oddly after modding, switch to your backup copy rather than trying to fix the modded one. It is far simpler to restore a known good save than to untangle problems caused by conflicting mod files.

Treat your offline modded game as its own separate space. Keep it, its save file, and its launch method apart from anything you use online, and mods stay a safe, reversible bit of fun rather than a risk to your account.
